Top Gear | Self Driving BMW 330i
by: Stuart

Here is the BMW 330i self driving, GPS directed car is featured on Top Gear.

It looks amazingly accurate.

The feeling of letting the car drive must be nerve racking.

Rotten Apple? | Is Apple Ready For That Many Users?
by: Stuart

I personally think that Apple is not ready and has not been prepared for mass success. Even the kill-switch and 3G connection problems will piss off the most zealot Apple fan boys and girls:

From the Slate (full story here):

The half-price fib has been obvious for some time: When you add the price of AT&T’s required two-year contract, the new phone costs slightly more than the old phone. In a lawsuit filed last week, an iPhone owner named Jessica Alena Smith argues that Apple hasn’t been honest about the phone’s speed, either. Smith, echoing thousands of complaints logged on Apple’s Web site, says that her iPhone rarely connects to AT&T’s fast 3G network, instead staying fixed to the pokey EDGE service that was the bane of the first iPhone. Smith’s iPhone doesn’t just fail on tasks like downloading e-mail and surfing the Web, she says. It also drops many of her voice calls.

Smith lives in Birmingham, Ala., but I’ve had the same problem with my iPhone 3G in cell-tower-rich San Francisco—more dropped calls than I’ve ever had on a cell phone (including on the original iPhone) and terribly spotty 3G service. Last month, I raved about the great third-party programs available on the iPhone’s fantastic built-in App Store. But I’ve since soured on that system, too. As many iPhone owners have noticed, the phone often mysteriously refuses to load these apps, rendering them useless. Smith is asking a judge to grant her lawsuit class-action status. I hope it’s approved. Apple has reluctantly acknowledged flaws in the iPhone and has quietly promised to correct them, but there’s no sign that it’s taking the complaints very seriously. The lawsuit might be just the kick it needs to fix the world’s broken iPhones.

But the company’s troubles go beyond the iPhone. Last month, Apple launched MobileMe, a $100-per-year online service that aimed to sync documents and e-mail across computers and Internet devices. MobileMe failed spectacularly in its opening weeks, with some users reporting losing years of saved e-mail. In a widely circulated post, Techcrunch’s Michael Arrington claimed last week that Apple’s PCs aren’t doing so well either. Arrington, a longtime Apple fan, says he’s had four new Macs break in different ways—one refused to connect to Wi-Fi networks, one suffered a keyboard flaw, and two shut down mysteriously…

Do go read it all, it is an interesting POV.

Come on Samsung Instinct, it’s time for a “I’m a iPhone and I’m Instinct” commercial parody.

Sprint Instinct | Scary Movie Product Placement
by: Stuart

I have not been a fan of Sprint commercials but this one is pretty good.

Sprint is really pushing the Samsung Instinct for good reason. It’s a great mobile device (via Gizmodo) and they need to get some traction against AT&T and iPhone 3G release.

With the new 3G iPhone having issues connection to the AT&T network and the recently release Apple “kill switch” Sprint and others should attack while the press is a little sketchy on the iPhone, which I’m sure they will figure out shortly.

Here is another story that went out today: Dropped calls plague iPhone 3G, and not just in U.S.

The Best Sprint Commercial

I think this one was Nextel first, before the merger.

It’s not new but I think it’s still the best even if it’s a borrowed spot.

I know we have posted it before, here on DHADM or Transbuddha. I don’t care, it’s that good.

ACR GPS | Great Ad
by: Stuart

This is one of the simplest and best commercials I have seen in a long time.

Based on a logic tree of options, the commercial jumps to the different stills almost like a story board. I thinks it’s brilliant.

More on ACR Electronics, the site really sucks and it’s too bad they don’t leverage this inexpensive but clever idea on the web site…maybe into the manual etc.

ACR, you should leverage this in all your communications.

Garmin GPS advert
by: Sarah

For all your GPS needs, here is a Garmin commercial with a unibrow and a minihorse all in one advert!  The holiday season is running towards us!  Only 20 days left until that stressful, yet glorious day.  I hope you have your GPS system ready to help you make your holiday shopping more easy.  This should get you in the Christmas spirits.

Also, look for that mini horse being DRUG [not really] as a Christmas present.

With the Verizon mini horse escapade happening I just thought it was funny to see another mini horse.  Are people giving these minihorses out as stocking stuffers? or are they giving them out like they are fruit cakes?  If that is the case, can I have two? I want to see them battle [again, not really, maybe, I'm unsure].

Not all recycled electronics are handled properly
by: Sarah

pile of crt monitorsI read an article on CNN about recycling old technology. I was shocked to read that everything from televisions to cellphones are shipped to China, Nigeria and India. Where they use hammers and blow torches to extract the metal from our techno trash, polluting our environment with deadly chemicals.

Many activists believe the answer lies in requiring electronics makers to take back and recycle their own products. Such laws would encourage manufacturers to make products that are easier to recycle and contain fewer dangerous chemicals, they say.

Eight states, including five this year, have passed such laws, and companies such as Apple, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Sony now take back their products at no charge. Some require consumers to mail in their old gear, while others have drop-off centers. HP says it also now designs its equipment with fewer toxic materials and has made it easier to recycle.

Jim Puckett of the Basel Action Network says it well, “it is being recycled, but it’s being recycled in the most horrific way you can imagine.” Then he says, “We’re preserving our own environment, but contaminating the rest of the world.”

Go check out this article, it isn’t just for those who are die hard environmentalists.

Destination of ‘recycled’ electronics may surprise you

iPhone Street Commercial | Bryce “Delay”
by: Sarah

I have posted several of the new iPhone commercials over the past two or three weeks, so here is another one.  This one involves an impatient pilot who did not want to sit and wait for a storm that had already passed their location.  Agreeable, I hate waiting for flights too, so thank you Mr. Pilot for whipping out your iPhone in a time of crisis.

Mechanical Turk | Can it be used to find monsters?
by: Sarah

BigfootSo Yahoo! News posted an article called, “Satellite Searches Could Spot Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster.” It seems as though the Mechanical Turk, like the one used to search for the still missing Steve Fossett, could be used to search for such creatures. Although it says that the satellite would probably not be able to zoom close enough to see just one Bigfoot, but if there was a family, which there would have to be some sort of breeding for it to stay alive, they would be easier to spot. The Loch Ness is much larger than the 12 foot Bigfoot, so it would be easier to spot.

Monster hunters would no longer have to go outside to search for their favoriteLoch Ness Monster monsters. They could now sit in the privacy of their own home to look for the beasts.

Although Yahoo! News also says that no matter how long they spent looking for the creatures without any sign of them it would not crush their spirits. People could simply say, “they did not look hard enough” and the theory of the creatures being just a myth would be disputed. There will always be Bigfoot and Loch Ness Monster fans willing to search for the myth.

Steve Fossett | Missing 10 days
by: Sarah

CNN.com has been covering the full story on the progress for the search of Steve Fossett who has been missing 10 days. CNN reported:

Searchers followed up on a tip received Wednesday from a woman who had been staying in a remote cabin just over the state line in California, at Sonora Pass north of Yosemite National Park.

“She was in her cabin, and heard a plane fly over … and then she heard a loud explosion or a loud crash noise and saw a little bit of smoke,” said Maj. Ed Locke of the Nevada National Guard.

The Alpine County, California investigators met with the woman who gave the tip on Thursday. They are attempting to pinpoint where she heard the sounds, and when she heard them. They say it will take about four or five days.

The search is about 80 percent complete according to Maj. Ed Locke of the Nevada National Guard. But that is not to discourage people from wanting to help. Although there has been no sign of Fossett or his plane after ten days.

Searchers are on the ground combing through an area where two witnesses saw a plane fly into a canyon and not come out. CNN.com states, “The Civil Air Patrol suspended its air searches Thursday because of high winds. They were scheduled to resume Friday.”

Fossett went missing on Labor Day and since that point, “hundreds of rescuers and dozens of aircraft have taken part in the air and ground search effort, which encompasses the rugged high desert in western Nevada and eastern California” (CNN.com).

Volunteers have been using the Fossett MTurk project to help find any sign of him. The MTurk allows people to use Google Earth to find crash sites. People all over the world have been calling in with information.
